Chef John Howie and his team huddle up to kick local hunger

November 20, 2012

Chef John Howie and friends give back

For 10 years running Chef John Howie has reached out to families in need during the holidays, and this year is no exception. On November 22nd Howie and his team at downtown Bellevue’s Seastar Restaurant and Raw Bar are opening the doors to an expected guest list of 500 to host a Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings. The majority of Seastar’s guests are Eastside families served by these non-profit organizations: Bellevue LifeSpring, Hopelink, Olive Crest, Redmond YWCA, and The Sophia Way.

Generous volunteers from Howie’s restaurant staff, friends and family will join together to cook, wash dishes and serve guests a warm and satisfying holiday meal. As soon as all the tables have been cleared, volunteers also get to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with Howie and his family at the restaurant.

Chef John Howie has been committed to charitable giving throughout his career. When he opened his first restaurant 11 years ago he made a promise to maintain a philanthropic culture throughout the business and his giving doesn’t stop at cooking a Thanksgiving dinner for 500.

Howie has also been hard at work as the Seahawks’ chef representative for a series of charitable campaigns and events sponsored by the NFL including the Kick Hunger Challenge and Taste of the NFL . The Taste of the NFL will match the dollar amount of the top fundraising city in the Kick Hunger Challenge, and Howie hopes to bring home a win for the Bellevue and Seattle region. Those dollars – and the Taste of the NFL’s match – would benefit local organization Food Lifeline. The Kick Hunger Challenge runs from now until February 2, 2013. Here’s how you can get involved:

Contest for the Challenge
Donate $25 or more in the name of the Seattle Seahawks for the Kick Hunger Challenge and be entered to win a Super Bowl Party for 8 people at John Howie’s Seattle restaurant SPORT Restaurant & Bar. Donate and support the Seattle Seahawks fundraising campaign.

Cocktails for the Challenge
Each of Chef John Howie’s restaurants will be offering a special Super Bowl XLVII themed cocktail, and for each cocktail sold, $1 will be donated back to the Kick Hunger Challenge. John Howie Steak is featuring the “Café Sazerac” made with Woodinville Rye Whiskey, sweet vermouth, a raw sugar cube, coffee bitters and Absinthe washed stirred over ice. Seastar Restaurant and Raw Bar in downtown Bellevue is featuring the “Howie Hurricane” made of Cruzan Silver rum and a house mix of pineapple juice, Bordeaux cherry juice, pomegranate juice, house-made sweet & sour and Amaretto.

Cheers!
